Buffalo Sabres Loss In Big-D Proves We Need High Tech Hockey by Adam DeRose

I’m a fan of Nick Deslauriers. How can you dislike a guy who gives it his all one almost every shift? He’s the type of player that you know his presence when he is on the ice. If Scrappy Doo could play hockey, he would be Nick. He’s like Rob Ray 2.0 or Patrick Kaleta 2.0. If you need a guy to back you up, it would be Deslauriers. And just like Ray and Kaleta, Deslauriers has a nice set of boxing hands, but suffers from having a pair of stone hands. More often than not, Nick finds himself as a healthy scratch. His lack of scoring has hurt the team, especially during this time when the Sabres need goal scorers; it’s understandable why Coach Dan doesn’t play him.

So far this season, Deslauriers has 0 goals and 0 assists during 23 games. In his four years in Buffalo, he’s amassed 12 goals and 16 assists in 192 games ( ). It’s hard to justify holding onto a guy who literally gives you nothing on offense, those numbers make it practically impossible to unload him.

Rich here: maybe Bylsma should play Deslauriers alongside Jack Eichel and Sam Reinhart so those two can feed him the puck. It worked for Cody Hodgson in Vancouver!

Nick’s contract expires in 2018. With the trade deadline just around the corner, who knows if he is on the trading block. If Deslauriers doesn’t get peddled away, I don’t see General Manager Tim Murray “saving” him for the Sabres during the expansion draft. Who knows, maybe Las Vegas needs an enforcer type player. If he does get traded or snatched up during the expansion draft, I’m sure that he would want to fight one of his former teammates. In a few months from now, we could see a Nick Deslaurier vs. Marcus Foligno fight, not at the MGM Grand or Mandalay Bay, but at T-Mobile Arena. Or could it be a fight under the lights at Madison Square Garden?

The Buffalo Sabres don’t have a lot of guys who throw their bodies around every night and are willing to drop the gloves, so you hate to lose one of the two guys on the roster who will step up and defend someone like Reinhart, Eichel or the next prospect to get the call up. Still, the days of having a zero-point guy on your team a la John Scott are gone, so you have to wonder how much longer Desluariers will be wearing a Sabres sweater.

A surface, atmospheric, and cloud (fraction, height, optical thickness, and particle size) property anomaly retrieval from highly averaged longwave spectral radiances is simulated using 28 years of reanalysis. Instantaneous nadir-view spectral radiances observed from an instrument on a 90° inclination polar orbit are computed. Spectral radiance changes caused by surface, atmospheric, and cloud property perturbations are also computed and used for the retrieval. This study’s objectives are 1) to investigate whether or not separating clear sky from cloudy sky reduces the retrieval error and 2) to estimate the error in a trend of retrieved properties. This simulation differs from earlier studies in that annual 10° latitude zonal cloud and atmospheric property anomalies defined as the deviation from 28-yr climatological means are retrieved instead of the difference of these properties from two time periods. The root-mean-square (RMS) difference of temperature and humidity anomalies retrieved from all-sky radiance anomalies is similar to the RMS difference derived from clear-sky radiance anomalies computed by removing clouds. This indicates that the cloud property anomaly retrieval error does not affect the retrieved temperature and humidity anomalies. When retrieval errors are nearly random, the error in the trend of retrieved properties is small. Approximately 30% of 10° latitude zones meet conditions that the true temperature and water vapor amount trends are within a 95% confidence interval of retrieved trends, and that the standard deviation of retrieved anomalies is within 20% of the standard deviation of true anomalies . If / − 1 is within ±0.2, 91% of the true trends fall within the 95% confidence interval of the corresponding retrieved trend.

Practice Guide

Developing Effective Fractions Instruction for Kindergarten Through 8th Grade
This practice guide presents five recommendations intended to help educators improve students’ understanding of fractions. Recommendations include strategies to develop young children’s understanding of early fraction concepts and ideas for helping older children understand the meaning of fractions and the computations involved. The guide also highlights ways to build on students’ existing strategies to solve problems involving ratios, rates, and proportions.
Build on students’ informal understanding of sharing and proportionality to develop initial fraction concepts.
Help students recognize that fractions are numbers and that they expand the number system beyond whole numbers.
Help students understand why procedures for computations with fractions make sense.
Develop students’ conceptual understanding of strategies for solving ratio, rate, and proportion problems before exposing them to cross-multiplication as a procedure to use to solve such problems.
Professional development programs should place a high priority on improving teachers’ understanding of fractions and of how to teach them.
